Why booking early matters

Start looking for alterations as soon as you have the dress in hand, ideally several months out from the date if the dress needs significant work like a bodice take in or a full hem on a heavily layered skirt. Formalwear for a prom, a gala, or a milestone event benefits from the same lead time, even if the changes are simpler. Booking early leaves room for a second or third fitting if the first pass needs adjusting, without the pressure of a date bearing down on every decision.

What a typical fitting sequence looks like

• First fitting: the dress is pinned to your body in a basted, temporary stitch so nothing is permanent yet
• Second fitting: the basted changes are checked while you wear the actual shoes and undergarments you plan to wear on the day
• Final fitting: last small adjustments, hem checked walking and standing, any hooks, bustle points, or closures confirmed

Basting first means the tailor can see how the changes actually look and move before committing with permanent stitching. It is normal for something that looked right at the first fitting to need a small correction at the second, especially around the bodice or waist, and that is not a sign anything went wrong. It is simply how bridal work is supposed to proceed.

Hems on layered skirts and bustles

A layered or tulle skirt takes longer to hem than a single layer dress because each layer often needs to be measured and finished on its own so the layers still fall evenly once the length is shortened. A bustle, the arrangement that lifts a train off the floor for the reception, is fitted at the same time as the hem so the bustle points sit correctly once the skirt is at its finished length. Bring the shoes you will wear on the day to every fitting that touches the hem or the bustle. A half inch of heel height changes both, the same way it changes a trouser break.

Bodice, zippers, and linings

Taking in a bodice affects how the whole dress sits through the shoulders and waist, so it is usually handled early in the fitting sequence rather than at the last appointment. If a dress has a lining or an invisible zipper that needs replacing, that work can be done alongside other alterations.
